On sortition, and what a lottery can legitimately decide

Honored to have an article published in the inaugural issue of the Journal of Sortition.

“The Limits of Representativeness in Citizens’ Assemblies: A Critical Analysis of Democratic Minipublics” examines key questions about representation in citizens’ assemblies. The work builds on ideas from a blog post I co-authored with Paolo Spada, refined through valuable discussions with scholars and practitioners in the field, including exchanges in the Deliberative Democracy Digest.

Our research explores the complexities of achieving representativeness in democratic minipublics and proposes ways forward - including through artificial intelligence - aiming to contribute to both research and practice in deliberative democracy.

For those interested in deliberative democracy and democratic innovations, printed copies of this inaugural issue are available free upon request. Link to the journal in the comments.
