Yang and colleagues at Stanford HAI report in Nature Human Behavior that opening up to chatbots about personal issues made some people feel worse rather than better, and that intense chatbot use among participants with smaller real-world social networks was correlated with a poor sense of well-being, with the association strongest when companionship was the primary motivation for seeking out the chatbots.
